Segway today, Vespa tomorrow

October 21, 2008

For yesterday’s Daddy Adventure, first we went and voted early.  I told Besh we would go to the mall afterwards, so he proceeded to tell everyone else in line.  “I go to mall next.  No, I go to mall RIGHT NOW!”  But we did vote.  He got a sticker and everything.

At the mall we saw the security guard driving around on his Segway.  Besh is enamored with the Segway.

Besh: “Daddy!  You see that?”

Me: “I see it.  You like it?”

“That man is driving a scooter!”

“That’s right.”

“That’s my favorite scooter.”

“Your favorite?”

“Yes.  For now.”

Celestial smacktalk

October 8, 2008

Yesterday for the Daddy Adventure we walked to the big metro park near our neighborhood (well, I walked/pushed Besh in his tricycle while he wore his Thomas the Train helmet and tried to keep his feet on the peddles) to go throw a boomerang and a frisbee.  On the way back the long stretch of road was heading west, into the sun.

Besh: “Super bright sun!”

Me: “It sure is.”

“Sun off please.  Off please.”

“It’s going down, but it may take a while.  But you know what?”

“What?”

“You don’t need to worry about the sun because you put on sunscreen before we left.”

“Yeah!”

“So you can say, ‘Take that, Mr. Sun!  You can’t burn me!’”

“Can’t burn me!  Take it!  Take it!  Take it!  Take it!  Take it!  Take it!”

The second toddler trinity

October 3, 2008

Besh didn’t want to go to swim class yesterday afternoon, thinking we’d miss our Daddy Adventure.  Very sweet, even though I told him we’d still do an adventure after class.  But he was very excited when I got hom.

Besh: “We go adventure?”

Me: “Absolutely.  Where are we going?”

As ticks off the locations using his fingers.

“I go brand new Chuck E Cheese.  Then I go mall.  Then I go Target.”

“That’s a big big Adventure!”

“Yeah!!!”

We went to Costco and the grocery store instead (the pantry beckoned).  I’m anticipating a bigger make-up Adventure today.

Under The Rainbow

September 28, 2008

Pulling into parking lot for Barnes & Noble (as Besh calls it, “the train store” due to the Thomas display in the kids section), we find an empty spot in front of Michael’s.  They’re displaying scarecrows for Halloween.

Besh: “That’s a scary clown.”

Me: “It’s a scarecrow.”

“Oh.  Like ‘Under The Rainbow.’”

“You mean ‘Over The Rainbow’?”

“Yeah.  That’s a super super good song.  I love it.”

“That is a good song.”

“But not the rest.  I can’t watch it.  It’s too scary.”

Which is true, as I’ve told him several times (we’ve watched the opening few minutes of Wizard of Oz, but I stop before the tornado).  But then how did he know there’s a scarecrow in it?

Daddy phone is old

September 26, 2008

Yesterday at the mall, we got dinner at Chick-Fil-A.  Besh was sitting on the counter while I ordered, holding Daddy Phone (cell).  Man in his late 20s orders at next cash register and Besh decides to strike up a conversation.

Besh (holding up Daddy phone): “This my phone.”

Man: “Oh, that’s your phone?”

“No.  It’s Daddy phone.  Where your phone?”

Man laughs.  Reaches into pocket, pulls out some slick something or other.  Besh’s eyes go wide.  He immediately drops my phone into my shirt pocket and points at the man’s phone.

THAT my phone!”

Me: “Besh, that’s not your phone.”

Besh reaches back into my pocket and grabs the Daddy Phone.  He sighs.

“No.  This my phone.”

“I’m a pirate!”

September 25, 2008

Yesterday we did the second visit to Chuck E Cheese.  Wednesday afternoon was awesome–he and 2 other kids had their run of the place.

After winning some tickets in some game or another, he got a toy dinosaur and a pirate eye patch.  We put it on and he promptly ran up to the (singing) Chuck E robot, waving frantically and pointing at his eyes.

“Look!  Look, Chuck E Cheese!  Look my eyes!  I’m a pirate!  I’m a pirate!  Look!”

Chuck E kept on singing.  10 seconds later the patch broke (making it, I think, the longest lasting 10-ticket pirate patch in the chain’s history).  Besh didn’t care, there were more cars to drive.

Daddy, how do you spell trademark dilution?

September 22, 2008

First visit to Chuck E. Cheese today.  He was excited, having heard the name at the tail end of Curious George on PBS (no pun intended, they’re a sponsor).

We walk in, order, sit in the showroom.  The animatronic band is doing a number.  He sees Chuck himself, the eyebrows shoot up, he stands on the chair, points and screams–

“DADDY!  MICKEY MOUSE!”

The best potato salad in Texas

September 21, 2008

Besh and I went to Snow’s BBQ today.  (web)  Has the reputation of being the best BBQ in Texas, according to Texas Monthly.

Me: “Want to try some brisket?”

Besh takes another bite of the potato salad: “Oh no thank you Daddy.”

“But it’s the best!”

“I like the potato food.  Potato salad.”

Daddy car loud!

September 18, 2008

On the way home from yesterday’s Daddy Adventure, Besh noticed the Mommy car in the middle of the garage. Had to park in the driveway.

Besh: “Want to go inside garage!”
Me: “I know, but Mommy car is in the middle so I can’t. Mommy isn’t feeling well so she parked there–and remember we have to be super super quiet when we go inside.”
“Oh. Okay.”
As we get out I lock the car. It honks.
B: “Daddy car–shhhhh! Mommy sleeping!”

Walking in the mall

September 17, 2008

Yesterday during our Daddy Adventure, as we’re walking in the mall, Besh looks down at his shirt and grabs it.

Besh: “Oh no!”

Me: “What’s wrong?”

“This my work shirt!  I didn’t change!”

“That’s okay–you look good in that shirt.”

“Oh!  Thank you, Daddy!”  He stops walking and looks at me.  “I give you hug and a kiss.”

He reaches up to me and does just that.

We spent a little longer in the Apple store than I had originally planned.
